UAE Researchers Seek to Extract Halal Gelatin from Camels
Highlights: A team of researchers at UAE University is exploring the possibility of obtaining gelatin from camel skin, as a halal substitute for traditional gelatin. Traditional gelatin is usually derived from the skin, bones, and connective tissues of animals such as cows and pigs. However, gelatin derived from pigs is not considered halal by Muslims, while gelatin from cows may not be acceptable to some halal consumers due to concerns about the way the animals were slaughtered. Therefore, the researchers are investigating the possibility of using camel skin, which is readily available in the UAE and other countries in the Middle East, as a halal source of gelatin. The team is studying the chemical composition of camel skin and developing methods for extracting and purifying the gelatin from it. If successful, the use of camel skin gelatin could offer a viable halal alternative to traditional gelatin for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.
