Laws, Regulations, and/or Policies: Currently only food, meat & meat-based products and ingredients require a mandatory halal certificate to enter the Saudi Arabian market.

The SFDA has established strict guidelines and regulations for the production, manufacturing, and certification of halal pharmaceuticals in the country. This includes requiring that all ingredients used in the production of halal medicines are halal-certified, and that the manufacturing process adheres to strict halal standards.

Saudi Arabia also revised medical device customs rules to implement a new pathway for medical devices and faster registration, with the potential to establish leading halal regulations. Devices need to comply with the Global Harmonization Task Force (GHTF).

Halal Certifying Bodies: The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) is the authority for monitoring the food, drugs, medical devices and cosmetics in the country.

Requirements for Halal Pharmaceutical Certification:

Saudi Arabia is a member of The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC). All SMIIC members follow the Malaysian Standard of Halal Pharmaceuticals (MS2424) as the basic guideline for halal certification of pharmaceutical products.
