Malaysia is a Paragon of a Thriving Halal Industry. Here’s Why.

Highlights: Malaysia has been a pioneer in the halal industry since 1974 when it began issuing halal certification letters for Shariah-compliant products. It has consistently topped the Global Islamic Economy Indicator (GIEI) rankings and excelled in various sectors such as Islamic finance, halal food, travel, and media and recreation.

Malaysia’s commitment to the halal industry is evident through dedicated government agencies like the Halal Development Corporation and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM). It has strategically positioned the halal industry as a key driver of economic growth in its Twelfth Malaysia Plan, with the Halal Industry Master Plan 2030 (HIMP 2030) focusing on further development.

HIMP 2030 aims to enhance the talent pool, infrastructure, and value-added products in the halal industry, with a goal to increase halal exports to 63.1 billion ringgits by 2025 and 75.2 billion ringgits by 2030.

The integrated approach involves partnerships, cross-border collaborations, and platforms like the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS), which recently saw significant growth, contributing 3.11 billion ringgits in sales, surpassing its target. MIHAS 2023 emphasized innovation and sustainability to drive the halal economy forward.
