Bio Farma Looks to Develop Halal MR Vaccine
Highlights: Indonesia’s state-owned PT Bio Farma is planning to develop a halal measles-rubella (MR) vaccine. This decision was made after concerns were raised over the use of vaccines that contained materials derived from pigs. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) had earlier issued a fatwa declaring that the MR vaccine was permissible for use by Muslims, despite containing such materials. However, the commission secretary of the MUI fatwa emphasized that once a halal MR vaccine had been developed, the current MR vaccine would be considered haram as it utilized haram materials in its production process.
